This recall applies to the Cyntur Mini Lithium Ion Jumpstarter, part number CTJSLI purchased between January 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016.
We have received multiple reports in which the cable assembly included with the Cyntur Mini Lithium Ion Jumpstarter overheated and melted. In five of these cases the battery itself overheated. Four of the five batteries which overheated caught on fire. Property damage was reported in two of the cases and a burn blister on the hand was reported in one of the cases.
Extended cranking of the engine while the Cyntur battery is attached causes sustained high current discharge from the battery and the cable assembly to overheat and fail. In some cases the cable assembly failure allows the battery to accept a reverse charge from the vehicle’s alternator. Both of these scenarios may result in overheating and fire.
